Message from the founder

“

Like many Filipinos, I dreamt of building a life abroad. Not because I love the Philippines any less—I never will. But because I couldn't bear the thought of growing old and wondering, “What if?”

I founded Compás Mobility out of a quiet heartbreak—witnessing too many of our *kabayans* pour their best years into temporary contracts. Working tirelessly, sending money back home month after month, yet missing the birthdays, milestones, and moments with loved ones that money can never replace. I’ve seen retired OFWs return home after decades abroad, stripped of the health insurance they depended on for years, only to watch their life savings disappear just to get proper medical care. All while knowing that bringing your family along meant living under the same shadow—always wondering when you might have to leave.

Spain offers a different story. For Filipinos, it is a rare doorway—a gift of history that opens the path to citizenship in just two years of legal residence. Not only for you, but for your family.

Make no mistake, this journey takes sacrifice, grit, and investment. It means learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and embracing a new way of life. But what you gain at the end is permanence—a place where you never have to pack your life into a suitcase again.

I’m living this journey myself right here in Madrid every single day. Let’s walk this path together. Dahil hindi masamang mangarap, at lalong hindi masamang tuparin 'to—hindi lang para sa sarili, kundi para sa pamilyang pinaglalaanan natin ng lahat.

## Frequently asked questions

Is Compás an employment agency?

No. We don't find jobs or place workers. We help you get legal residency in Spain through a visa route that fits the work or savings you already have.

Which visa is right for me, the DNV or the NLV?

If you work remotely for a company or clients outside Spain, the Digital Nomad Visa is usually the fit. If you'll live on savings, a pension or passive income and won't work, the Non-Lucrative Visa is usually the fit. Your eligibility call will confirm it.

Can my family come with me?

Yes. On both visas you can include your spouse or partner, your children, and in some cases dependent parents. Each family member adds to the income or savings you need to show. Use our calculator to see the exact amount.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

Not to get the visa. You'll need basic Spanish (the DELE A2 exam) if you apply for citizenship, and it makes daily life much easier. We recommend starting early.

What documents will I need from the Philippines?

Usually your passport, PSA birth certificate (and marriage certificate if you're married), an NBI clearance, and proof of income or savings. Most documents need a DFA apostille and a sworn translation into Spanish. We give you a personalised checklist.

I am working overseas. Can I apply from the country where I currently work?

Yes. If you're a legal resident there, you can usually apply through the Spanish consulate in that country. You'll need a police clearance from that country. You'll also need an NBI clearance if you lived in the Philippines at any point in the last 5 years, even for a few months.

Will I be taxed twice, in Spain and the Philippines?

No. You pay tax once on each type of income. Spain taxes residents on their worldwide income. The Philippines taxes Filipinos living abroad only on income from the Philippines. The tax treaty between the two countries gives you credit for tax already paid, so you never pay the full amount twice.

What about the money I transfer from the Philippines, does it get taxed?

Moving your own savings is not taxable income. Interest, profits and investment returns are. Keep records showing where your money came from.

Does my time on the DNV or NLV count toward citizenship?

Yes. Both are legal residence permits, and for Filipinos the requirement is 2 years of continuous legal residence. You must also pass the DELE A2 and CCSE exams, have a clean record, and submit all required documents.

**Do I have to give up my Filipino citizenship?**

No. Spain doesn't require Filipinos to renounce their nationality, and the Philippines allows dual citizenship. You can hold both.

**Can I leave Spain during those 2 years?**

Short trips are fine, but long absences can break the "continuous residence" requirement. Plan any long trips with us first.

Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)

**How much do I need to earn?**

For 2026, at least about €2,849 a month for the main applicant. Add about €1,068 a month for your first family member and €356 for each additional one. The amount changes every year with Spain's minimum wage.

**Can I work for Spanish companies?**

Only a little. Freelancers can earn up to 20% of their income from Spanish clients. Employees must work for a company based outside Spain.

**Do I need a university degree?**

No. A degree helps, but at least 3 years of professional experience in your field is also accepted.

**How long must I have worked for my employer or clients?**

At least 3 months before you apply, and the company must have been operating for at least a year.

**How long is the DNV valid?**

If you apply from abroad, the visa lasts up to 1 year. If you apply from inside Spain, the residence permit lasts up to 3 years and can be renewed for 2 years at a time.

**Can my spouse work in Spain?**

Generally yes. Family members joining a DNV holder are usually allowed to work.

**Can my children go to school in Spain? Is it free?**

Yes. Every child living in Spain has the right to a free public education. School is compulsory from age 6 to 16, and public schools are also free from age 3 to 18. You'll still pay for some extras, such as school lunch, books, uniforms at some schools, and field trips. To enrol, you'll need your child's NIE or TIE, your padrón (town hall registration), birth certificate and school records, translated into Spanish. The school year runs from September to June.

**Can I travel around Europe?**

Yes. Your Spanish residence card lets you travel for short stays across the Schengen area without extra visas.

**What health insurance do I need for the DNV?**

We recommend a policy with no co-payments and no waiting periods, since many consulates and the immigration office ask for this. If you're registered in Spanish social security, for example as a self-employed worker or through your employer, you may get public healthcare instead. We'll check which option fits your case.

**Do I pay taxes on the DNV? How much?**

Yes. Once you live in Spain more than 183 days a year, you become a Spanish tax resident. \*Lets discuss on the call\*

**What if I lose my job or a client, and my income drops below the requirement? Will I be deported?**

Not overnight, but you need to act quickly. Your permit isn't cancelled automatically, but Spain doesn't give DNV holders an official grace period either. \*Will be explained on the call\*

Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)

**How much money do I need?**

For 2026, €2,400 a month (€28,800 a year) for the main applicant, plus €600 a month (€7,200 a year) for each family member. This can come from savings, a pension, rental income or investments.

**Can I work on the NLV, even remotely?**

No. The NLV doesn't allow any work in Spain, including remote work for a foreign company. If you work remotely, the Digital Nomad Visa is the right route.

**Can I apply from inside Spain?**

No. The NLV must be applied for at the Spanish consulate in the country where you legally reside—for example, in Manila, or in the country where you are a resident.

**How long is the NLV valid?**

The first permit is valid for 1 year. After that you renew for 2 years at a time. After 5 years you can apply for long-term residence.

**What kind of health insurance do I need?**

Private insurance from a company authorised in Spain, with full coverage and no co-payments. Travel insurance isn't accepted.

**Do I have to live in Spain full time?**

Yes, mostly. You should spend more than 183 days a year in Spain, or you risk losing your residence when you renew.

**Can I switch from the NLV to a work permit later?**

In some cases, yes. After a year on the NLV, it may be possible to switch if you get a qualifying job offer. We'll assess this with you.

**Do I pay taxes on the NLV?**

Yes, if you live in Spain more than 183 days a year. You become a Spanish tax resident and pay tax on your worldwide income, including pensions, interest, dividends and rental income. Rates run from 19% to 47% on general income, and from 19% to 28% on savings income such as interest and dividends.
